Federations Urge Congress to Extend Legislation for NSGP Improvement Act

A multi-faith coalition of nine organizations representing Jews, Christians, and Muslims and other religious groups are urging Congress to help protect houses of worship and nonprofits in the wake of recent shootings.

Led by the Jewish Federations of North America, the group sent a letter to Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chair Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) and Ranking Member Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) Tuesday, urging them to include the "Nonprofit Security Grant Program Improvement Act of 2022" in upcoming legislation.

"Twice this year, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued National Terrorism Advisory System bulletins warning the country to expect continued acts of violence against faith-based institutions, schools, and racial and religious minorities," the letter said.

"Both warnings recommended the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) as a critical resource to counter these threats."

The Nonprofit Security Grant Program provides funds for houses of worship and other nonprofits to improve their physical security and readiness for potential attacks.

The letter's signatories included The Jewish Federations of North America, ADL (Anti-Defamation League), Agudath Israel of America, National Association of Evangelicals, Religions for Peace USA, Secure Community Network, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, USCCB Committee for Religious Liberty, and US Council of Muslim Organizations.
