Sderot Summer Camp Dispatch: July 20 --- Scout Camp in the South

The Jewish Agency, with funding from the Israel Emergency Fund of the United Jewish Communities, is taking the entire population of 8,000 children ages 6 to 17 who live in the Sderot area out of the range of attack and letting kids do what they like best. From amusement parks to nature reserves, from water parks to concerts, and from touring the country to enjoying recreation with friends, kids from Sderot are having a great summer. (More about the program's funding.)

But why not hear it from them? Come back to this blog frequently to check out blog entries from different camps thoughout the summer.

The summer camp for scouts from Israel’s South opened thanks to the assistance of the Jewish Agency.

The Southern scout leadership has two troops whom the Jewish Agency is assisting: the Sinai troop from Sderot and the “Shaked” troop from Kibbutz Kfar Aza. These troops are the only ones operating in the Gaza perimeter. Pictured at left, the scout camp is set up by counselors for the older age level who had arrived the previous week for an advanced camp.

Today they will be joined by the younger scouts.

At the camp children will learn how to build structures out of wooden blocks and ropes, to cook for themselves and to prepare the camp for competitions and visits.

The troops will be visited by VIPs, including the Minister of Education, Professor Yuli Tamir, who will arrive this evening and on Tuesday, Shimon Peres, the President of Israel, will make a special visit to the “Sinai” troop.

The Jewish Agency is helping by financing 50% of the cost for children from Sderot and the Gaza perimeter.
