Jewish Federations of North America commend Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Representatives Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) for leading the reintroduction of the Afghan Adjustment Act in both the Senate and House.
 
SVP of Public Affairs at Jewish Federations of North America Elana Broitman said, “Currently, displaced Afghans resettled in the United States lack a pathway to lawful permanent residency, forcing them to go through a lengthy and uncertain asylum process or potentially risk facing deportation.  The Afghan Adjustment Act will allow eligible Afghans who undergo additional vetting to apply for permanent status, providing them a safe-haven and an opportunity to build a better future for themselves. Welcoming those fleeing persecution is a Jewish and American value that Jewish Federation are committed to, and we will continue to advocate for legislation that supports displaced Afghans and Ukrainians and to support our local agencies in resettling these refugees, building on our long and proud history across the Federation system of refugee support.”
 
Last year, Jewish Federations partnered with the Shapiro Foundation to help Jewish human service agencies in their efforts to resettle displaced Afghan. Working in partnership with Jewish human service agencies, the initiative enabled nearly 2,000 displaced Afghans to resettle in dozens of communities across 16 U.S. states and Canada.
